Quick answer · example
How much does it cost to store 2 TB in the cloud?

month = TB × price per TB + download GB × price per GB; total = month × months

How to use this calculator
Compare cloud storage services for backups or files with your own prices. Many providers charge per TB stored per month and separately for the data you download; some also charge for requests or for deleting files before a minimum number of days.
Worked example
2 TB × €6 = €12 a month for storage.
100 GB × €0.01 = €1 a month for downloads.
€12 + €1 = €13 a month; × 12 months = €156.

Interpreting the result
For backups, downloads are usually close to zero until you need to restore, and then they can be large: also work out the cost of recovering everything at once. Compare with a NAS or an external drive: a 4 TB drive costs about the same as a few months of cloud storage but does not protect you from fire or theft, so the best option is to combine both, as the 3-2-1 rule says.
Frequently asked questions
Why do they charge for downloads?
Data leaving their network has a cost for the provider. Some include it free up to a certain volume; check the small print.
What is minimum retention?
Some services charge as if each file were kept for a minimum number of days, even if you delete it earlier. It affects backups that rotate daily.
Should I use TB or TiB?
Most providers bill in decimal GB or TB, but some use GiB or TiB. The unit converter helps you compare.
