Mbps vs MB/s: conversion and download time

Convert Mbps to MB/s and estimate how long downloading 100 GB over a 100 Mbps connection takes.

Quick answer

How many MB/s is 100 Mbps?

100 Mbps equals a theoretical 12.5 MB/s. With an example efficiency of 80%, effective speed is 10 MB/s. Lowercase b means bits; uppercase B means bytes. One byte contains eight bits.

Calculating speed and time

Divide Mbps by eight to obtain decimal MB/s. For a 100 GB file at 100 Mbps and 80% efficiency: 100 × 1000 ÷ 10 = 10,000 seconds, or 2 h 46 min 40 s.

Calculated examples; rounded values.

Why actual speed can be lower

Overhead, the source server, storage and the local network can limit throughput. The 80% figure is an editable assumption, not a guarantee or measurement. MiB/s is a different unit from MB/s.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 1000 Mbps connection download at 1000 MB/s?

No. Its theoretical decimal maximum is 125 MB/s before overhead and other constraints. An actual measurement may be lower.
