Quick answer · example

How big is a 90 minute film at 8 Mbps?

An hour and a half of video at 8 Mbps takes 5.4 GB: 3.6 GB per hour or 60 MB per minute. The calculation uses the total bitrate, that is video plus audio.

Calculation assumptions

Estimates the size of a video from its total bitrate (video plus audio) and duration. With variable bitrate, use the average value.

Formula and assumptions

GB = Mbps × 60 × minutes / 8000

Estimates the size of a video from its total bitrate (video plus audio) and duration. With variable bitrate, use the average value.

How to use this calculator

Work out how much space a recording, an export from your editor or a live stream will take before you run out of room. Use the total bitrate shown by your camera, OBS or editing software; if it lists video and audio separately, add them up.

Worked example

  1. 8 Mbps × 60 = 480 Mb per minute.
  2. 480 Mb ÷ 8 = 60 MB per minute.
  3. 60 MB × 90 minutes = 5,400 MB, or 5.4 GB.

Interpreting the result

As a guide, YouTube recommends about 8 Mbps for uploading 1080p video at 30 fps and 35 to 45 Mbps for 4K. Cameras record at much higher bitrates, so an hour of 4K can exceed 40 GB. Leave some margin: files with variable bitrate can differ quite a lot from the average.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the bitrate of a video?

In VLC, under Tools → Codec Information; in Windows, Properties → Details shows the total bitrate.

Why is my file smaller than calculated?

With variable bitrate, simple scenes use less data than the configured average.

How big is an hour of OBS streaming at 6000 kbps?

6000 kbps is 6 Mbps: about 2.7 GB per hour.
